Properties of Silver -
Sterling Silver that is commonly used for jewelry is 92.5% silver. The other 7.5% is composed of alloys such as copper or nickel. These alloys are added to make the silver stronger but are also the reason why silver tarnishes.
Cleaning Your Silver Jewelry -
It is not recommended to clean your silver jewelry with toothpaste. They often contain gritty substances that can cause pits in the silver.
We really like the Cape Cod Metal Polishing Cloths which can be used on most metals. They come in a resealable package which contains two 4"X6" pre-moistened vanilla scented cloths. These cloths can be used over and over again and be revitalized by adding vegetable oil to them if they should become dry. These cloths will make your silver jewelry almost as good as new as scratches also disappear if they are not too deep! The cloths are available for $4.75 per package.
A soft polishing cloth that is made to clean silver is recommended when there are gemstones in the piece or when oxidation is desired.
Storing Your Jewelry -
Silver jewelry is best stored in a moisture free environment. Moisture is what hastens the oxidation process which results in tarnishing. There are jewelry boxes on the market that are lined with tarnish retardant fabric. You can skip this added expense and use plastic zip closure bags. When you leave a piece of silver in a jewelry box for years it will turn black - but it can be restored to its original beauty with a good cleaning. The best advice is to wear your silver jewelry and enjoy it!
